Macintosh Internet Set Up Guide

Here’s the Mac guide to take you through the simple steps needed to set up your software so that you can use the Internet via UK Fantastic

It covers the setting up of TCP/IP, MacPPP and additions for Mac OS8.

TCP/IP

Picture

TCP/IP is the heart of your connection. All of your software will use TCP/IP to talk to other computers on the Internet. TCP/IP stands for Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.

Go to the Apple Menu, then Control Panels, then find and open the TCP/IP Control Panel. If you do not have TCP/IP installed you will need to install it from the Macintosh System disks that came with your computer. If you do not have System 7.5.5, then you will need to purchase a copy of TCP/IP from your Apple dealer or shop.

If, instead of TCP/IP, you have MacTCP then there may be something you can try. Search (Command-F) for ''Network Software Selector''. If you have it, open it, select Use Open Transport Networking as opposed to Use Classic Networking and restart your Mac. If you don't have ''Network Software Selector'' then your System Software is too old for us to support.

When you open TCP/IP you will see a box like the one above. Click on the Connect via menu to select MacPPP. Then click on the Configure menu to choose Using PPP Server. You will need the PPP bits in order to do this. We will cover those later.

Your Mac compatible modem should have arrived with its own software that will allow the Mac networking software to talk to your modem. If you did not receive any software you may need to contact a software reseller in order to obtain the correct package. All the examples here use Apple's own Express modem.

Now that we have told TCP/IP how it is to talk to UK Fantastic, we need to tell it the addresses of the servers.

In the Name server addr: box type 195.188.107.40  and 195.188.107.42

When your TCP/IP Control Panel looks like the screen shot here close the window and click the Save button when asked if you wish to save. If you do not have three empty boxes down the right hand side press Command-U and choose the middle option (Advanced), then click OK. You should now have the three boxes down the right hand side.

Now that we have configured TCP/IP, we move on to set up another control panel, Config PPP.

PPP

Go to the Apple Menu, then Control Panels, then find and open the TCP/IP Control Panel.

This Control Panel actually changes the settings used by the PPP extension in the Extensions Folder. You need to make sure everything is in the right place.

Open the Config PPP Control Panel from your Apple menu and you should see something like this.

Click on the New button and type your_isp, or UK Fantastic. Use the Port Name menu to tell PPP which port your Modem is connected to, either the printer port or the modem port or your modem if it appears here, and make sure all the other choices are as in this picture. As you can see, this example knows that there is an internal modem, and so it was available on the menu. If your modem is external, plug it into the modem port (marked with a telephone symbol on the back of your Mac) and choose Modem Port at this stage.

When you are finished click on the Config button.

If you are using your modem through a telephone exchange, you may need a 9 before the phone number to gain an external line.

Fill in the details as shown, adding UK Fantastic as the server name if required and the 0845 number provided by UK Fantastic to dial into,  and click on the Connect Script button.

We need to check the connection script that PPP will use to connect to UK Fantastic.

You need to check each field is blank and all buttons are  the same, and click OK.

Next click on the Authentication button and fill it in:

The field your_login is the ‘ukf’ login name given by UK Fantastic. The Password field hides the text for security reasons behind the bullet points. Make sure you type it exactly as UK Fantastic gave it to you. The field is case sensitive, so make sure to determine whether your password has any capital letters in it.

MacOS 8 Extras

MacOS 8 includes two more Control Panels that need to be configured. If you are running a version of the Operating System earlier than 8, such as 7.5.5, 7.6.1 etc., you may ignore this section.

Open the PPP Control Panel.

Fill out everything as shown - UK Fantastic login name (ukf.....) and password and the telephone dial-up number provided for Internet access.

Clicking on the Options button will reveal 3 tabs that we will run through quickly. Simply make all the settings look like the following 3 pictures.

The same as before, use the Connect via menu to find either your modem or the port to which it is connected.

Then close and save.

Logging On

You are now ready to connect to the net. Use the Connect button in Config PPP or MacOS 8 PPP to do so. If you have already installed and configured a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, then you are now capable of browsing the web.
